Buffalo are the only wild cattle species found in Africa. The Savannah buffalo is the most common. They have very heavy horns and are dark brown in colour, and are found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The Savannah Buffalo are grazers, eating only grasses, reeds and aquatic plants. They are most often seen in open woodland savannah or river beds, where there is always plenty of water close by. Buffalo stay in large herds of males, females and young. The mother stays with the herd when giving birth. A new born calf weighs in at 40kgs.
