The plains Zebra, so called because it can be seen on the wide open plains of Africa. The South African Plains Zebra is recognised by it's 'shadow stripes'…thin stripes seen in between the thick black stripes. Zebra are found in Eastern and the Southern half of Africa. The plains zebra is the most common, with the most concentrated numbers being located in Kenya and Tanzania.
Zebra's run in small family herds, usually consisting of an adult stallion, mares and the foals. Much larger herds are often seen but these only stay together for short periods of time.

During the mating season males will fight to keep their females, and to gain new ones. Whilst some Zebra will always stay in their own home range, others migrate ..these migratory zebra can best be seen in East Africa's Sernegeti/Ngorongoro/Mara ecosystems. A single foal is born usually at the beginning of the rainy season. The foal weighs between 30 & 35kg's and will stand and run alongside its mother within about ½ hour of being born.
