Buffalo are one of Africa's BIG FIVE.
Many of the surviving population of Cape Buffalo, common to Southern Africa, have been infected by Bovine Tuberculosis from years of exposure to domesticated cattle. Infected buffalo are a threat to the survival of the whole herd, and to other animals that prey upon them, such as lion. The Phinda Game Reserve and KwaZulu Natal Nature Conservation Services have been working together on a programme to test whole herds of buffalo in an effort to save the species.
